S1E1 — "Long Day's Journey into Night"

Synopsis

The series opens in a rural home at night, where a little girl hears knocking and lets in a figure who appears to be an elderly woman. Once inside, the creature abandons its disguise and kills both the girl and her mother; the girl's father is not in the house. The victims are later identified as the wife and daughter of Frank Pratt, a town resident whose negligence the community will hold responsible for their deaths.

The Matthews family — father Jim, mother Tabitha, and their children Julie and Ethan — are midway through a cross-country trip in an RV when they come upon a fallen tree blocking the road. Forced onto a detour, they drive into a small town, where the local sheriff, Boyd Stevens, tells them to keep following the road. No matter how many times they drive it, the road loops back into the town, and the family cannot leave. Their repeated attempts end when another car, carrying two men named Tobey and Jade Herrera, collides with the RV, flipping it and leaving Ethan with a severe leg injury.

Townspeople arrive to help as night approaches. Tobey and Jade are taken back toward town, while Boyd and the town's doctor, Kristi Miller, stay with Jim to treat Ethan. Elsewhere, Kenny Liu, Tabitha, Julie, Father Khatri, Jade, and Ellis Stevens rush toward a place called Colony House to reach shelter before dark. When night falls, shadowy humanoid figures slowly emerge from the surrounding forest and surround the RV where Boyd, Kristi, Jim, and the injured Ethan wait.
