Kenny Liu — Deputy & Steady Hand

Overview

Kenny Liu is the town's deputy and Boyd Stevens' most loyal lieutenant — the steady, dutiful presence who holds the town together when its leader falters. He lost both parents to the town's horrors and carries his grief into every decision he makes. He is played by Ricky He.

Biography

Kenny lived in the town with his parents, Bing-Qian Liu and Tian-Chen Liu, running the diner as a family. His father, suffering from dementia, wandered out at night and was killed by the creatures (S1E02). Kenny's first season is spent helping Boyd hold the town together: he investigates the town's impossible geography with Jade Herrera, discovering that the town has no fixed location (S1E04).

In Season 2 Kenny grows close to Kristi Miller, the town's doctor — a fragile romance that ends when her fiancée, nurse Marielle Sinclair, is revealed to be among the newcomers. His grief deepens in Season 3: his mother Tian-Chen is taken by the creatures in the barn and killed in front of the town (S3E01). Kenny's rage at Boyd and at the town's helplessness nearly breaks him, and he struggles to find a purpose in the aftermath.

In Season 4 Kenny steps back into service. He and Victor Kavanaugh guide the group to the Man in Yellow's abandoned car (S4E07), and in the fight against the reanimated straw-doll creature he stabs it with a totem — the blow is ineffective, showing how outmatched the residents are (S4E07). Having served as deputy and, at times, as sheriff, Kenny remains one of the town's few steady authorities as Boyd's expedition descends beneath the bottle tree (S4E09–10).

Loyal, methodical, and quietly grieving. Kenny is the reliable one — Boyd's right hand, the town's errand-runner and moral compass. His parents' deaths hollowed him out, but he converts grief into duty rather than rage.
