Julie Matthews — Storywalker & Matthews Daughter
Overview
Julie Matthews is the teenage daughter of Jim Matthews and Tabitha Matthews and the older sister of Ethan Matthews. She arrived in the town with her family in S1E01 and chose to live at Colony House. In Season 4 she develops "storywalking" — the ability to revisit past moments through marked places — making her one of the town's most unusual residents and a figure of intense interest to the entities.
Biography
Julie arrived trapped like the rest of her family, initially chafing at Colony House's communal rules (S1E04) and the town's darker habits. During the Colony House massacre (S1E07) she fled into the woods with Victor Kavanaugh, who sent her through a faraway tree into a root cellar, saving her life. In Season 2 she befriended fellow newcomer Elgin Williams (S2E04) and became one of the three residents targeted by the music box entity — "they come for three" (S2E09). She lapsed into a cicada-induced coma and was glimpsed chained and tortured in the dungeon before Boyd Stevens destroyed the music box (S2E10). She later explored the ruins with Ethan (S3E08), where she had a vision of the dungeon, and learned to drive with Randall Kirkland (S3E07).
On the night of S3E10 she was present when the Man in Yellow killed her father, warning her that she cannot change the past no matter how hard she tries. In S4E02 she and Ethan found Jim's body hanging in the barn with "knowledge comes at a cost" written above it. With Randall's help she began traveling back in time from the ruins — first to the night the cicadas attacked Randall (S4E02) — then, after retrieving Ethan's books from the collapsed house, she studied the storywalking theory that marking a place allows one to revisit that moment (S4E03–04). She traveled to Victor's childhood and saw the Man in Yellow there (S4E04), barely escaping when Randall pulled her back; the theory did not work as intended. Through S4E09 she remained skeptical of Tabitha's claim to be Miranda's reincarnation, insisting the place is deceiving them.
