Martin — The Dying Man in the Dungeon
Overview
Martin is the emaciated, half-rotted man Boyd Stevens finds chained in the stone dungeon beneath the ruins — the same dungeon that later holds the music box. He warns Boyd that the creatures are "the tip of the spear," infects Boyd with the blood-worms, and dies almost immediately after (S2E01–02). He is the first being in the town who speaks openly of things worse than the monsters.
Biography
After Sara Myers pushes Boyd into a faraway tree on the forest expedition (S1E10), he emerges in a dark stone dungeon deep beneath the forest. There, chained by the ankle and clearly near death, sits Martin — his body wasted, his flesh decayed, his hair gone in patches. He has been imprisoned there for a very long time.
Martin wastes no time on comfort. He tells Boyd that the creatures of the forest are only "the tip of the spear" — that far worse things exist in this place, and that Boyd has no idea what is coming. He warns of the curse that comes for three ("they touch, they break, they steal; no one here is free" — the chant of the cicada/music box entity), and of the melody that must be stopped. Desperate and dying, Martin forces his infection on Boyd: his blood carries the blood-worms, and he transfers them to Boyd's arm, telling him it is the only way — the worms must pass to someone else before Martin dies. The act saves Martin's body nothing; he dies in the dungeon shortly after (S2E02), leaving Boyd chained beside his corpse with the worms crawling under his skin.
Boyd later turns the infection into the town's only victory over a creature: his worm-ridden blood kills Smiley (S2E06). The dungeon where Martin died is where Boyd ultimately destroys the music box, ending the cicada curse (S2E10), and the bottle tree's roots are later found to descend toward an even deeper burial chamber (S4E09–10).
Personality & Traits
Martin is a broken prophet: urgent, cryptic, and half-mad from isolation and decay, yet lucid enough to deliver the town's most important warning — that the monsters are not the worst of what lives there. Whether he was once a resident, a soldier, or something else entirely is never revealed.

Theories & Open Questions
- Who was Martin, and how long was he chained there? He appears to have been a prisoner of the town's deeper forces for years, possibly decades. (Not confirmed in-show.)
- Why did the worms need a living host to pass on, and what were they for? They prove lethal to the creatures — the only known weapon that kills one.
- Whether Martin was connected to the dungeon below the bottle tree roots, which Boyd's expedition descends into at the end of S4. (Not confirmed in-show.)
