Paula — Bus Passenger Killed by the Cicadas

Overview

Paula was a Season 2 newcomer who arrived on the bus, and the wife of fellow passenger Reggie. She became one of the first casualties of the music-box entity's attack: during the cicada crisis she was killed in her sleep, and her final words were the entity's chant (S2E09).

Biography

Paula arrived in the town with the bus at the start of Season 2 (S2E01), part of the passenger group that included Bakta, Marielle Sinclair, Randall Kirkland, Elgin Williams, and her husband Reggie. Like the other newcomers she was forced to accept the town's reality — the creatures, the talismans, the choice between a private house and Colony House. She and Reggie settled into a home of their own, and she lived quietly in the background while the town absorbed the bus's passengers.

When the music-box entity began manifesting cicadas (S2E08–09), Boyd Stevens and Kenny Liu discovered that the cicadas had killed Paula in her sleep. Before dying she spoke the chant: "They touch, they break, they steal. No one here is free." Her death pushed Boyd to gather the residents and warn them to stay awake, and it sent Reggie — who had fled his house screaming when the cicadas first appeared (S2E08) — to Colony House, where he warned the residents in turn (S2E09).
