Bing-Qian Liu — Kenny's Father

Overview

Bing-Qian Liu was the elderly father of Kenny Liu and husband of Tian-Chen Liu. Suffering from dementia, he was a patient at the clinic with a caretaker when Sara Myers — compelled by voices — opened the clinic door, letting the creatures in to kill him (S1E02). He is played by Simon Sinn.

Biography

Bing-Qian came to the town with his wife and young son years before the Matthews family arrived; the Lius' arrival as a family is shown in flashback in S2E04. By Season 1 his dementia has advanced to the point that he requires constant care: the family keeps him at the clinic with a caretaker while Tian-Chen runs the diner and Kenny works as Boyd Stevens's deputy.

On the second night of the series, the clinic becomes the scene of a double tragedy. Sara Myers, following the voices in her head, kills the newcomer Tobey and opens the clinic door; the creatures enter and kill Bing-Qian and his caretaker. Kenny discovers the aftermath in the morning and mourns his father — the first of two devastating losses that define his time in the town. The death also deepens the town's fear of Sara, whose role in the massacre is only slowly uncovered.

Personality & Traits

Gentle and diminished by age and illness. Bing-Qian's dementia made him fragile and dependent, and the town remembers him less as a personality than as a beloved father figure whose death marked the end of the Lius' intact family. In his lucid moments he was a proud, kind patriarch — the foundation of the family that would go on to anchor the town.
