The Symbol

Overview

A recurring pictograph — a circle of trees — that Jade Herrera becomes obsessed with within days of arriving. It appears carved into a tree, drawn in a discarded notebook, and on the ceiling of the tunnels beneath the town. It is the same symbol Christopher obsessively drew in the 1970s, in the years before the massacre that killed most of the original residents. The symbol maps the place where the seven children were sacrificed, and it is the thread that ties Jade's visions, the bottle tree numbers, and the reincarnation cycle together.

Description & Rules

  • The pictograph. A diagram of trees arranged in a circle — seen carved into a tree trunk (S1E06), inked in an abandoned notebook (S1E06), and marked on the ceiling of the underground chamber (S2E10). Jade's drawings of the settlement mirror Tabitha Matthews's recurring childhood nightmare (S3E06) — the symbol and the nightmare are versions of the same image.
  • A map of the sacrifice. In S2E10 Jade has a vision of seven children chanting at an opening in a ceiling that matches the symbol exactly — the symbol is a schematic of the burial chamber where the children were sacrificed.
  • Not the talisman symbol. The pictograph on the talismans is different from Jade's symbol — an important distinction for anyone trying to decode the town's iconography.
  • Knowledge comes at a cost. Christopher's obsession with the symbol preceded the 1971 massacre. Victor, who witnessed it, refuses to tell Jade the whole truth because "when people ask questions and look for answers, they do not return" (S2E08). Jade's own pursuit of the symbol leads directly to the discoveries that get Jim Matthews killed ("knowledge comes at a cost," S4E02).
  • Tied to the bottle tree. The symbol's geometry connects to the bottle tree's numbers and roots; the tree itself grows above the chamber the symbol depicts, and its bottles encode the melody that summons the children.
  • The mirror. Christopher's book of symbols — the same notebook — drips blood in Jade's vision (S2E05), linking the symbol to the violence of the sacrifice. The symbol appears in mirrors and reflections throughout the series, most persistently in the bottle tree's vicinity.
