Donna Raines — Leader of Colony House

Overview

Donna Raines is the leader of Colony House, the communal home where newcomers who choose not to take a private house live together under her protection. She runs the town's second center of power alongside Boyd Stevens's sheriff's station, and her blunt, protective authority has kept Colony House's residents alive through three massacres and a heart attack. She is played by Elizabeth Saunders.

Biography

Donna is a long-term resident who leads Colony House through Choosing Day (S1E03), when newcomers decide between a private house and the communal life of the Colony House. She is a pragmatist who distrusts Boyd's harder judgments, but the two share a grim understanding of what leadership costs. In the Season 1 Colony House massacre (S1E07), the creatures — let in by the seduced Kevin — kill Trudy and others before being driven out; Donna survives and holds the shaken house together.

In Season 2 the bus arrival (S2E01) floods Colony House with newcomers, testing its resources and its rules. Season 3 brings food shortages and the arrival of the cop Dani Acosta and the newcomer Nicky; Donna has to manage a house simmering with fear and grief. In Season 4, at the lake, she is attacked by the giant straw dolls that killed Roger — she is saved when Tabitha Matthews destroys the dolls with a sharpened totem (S4E05). Weeks later Donna suffers a heart attack (S4E06) and is stabilized by Kristi Miller, the town's doctor.

Personality & Traits

Tough, blunt, and fiercely maternal. Donna rules Colony House with rules and warmth in equal measure, shielding her residents from the town's crueler realities while making the hard calls herself. She carries the weight of every death in her house and shows it only in private.
