Synopsis

Holding Sara Myers captive in a cellar, Father Khatri explains his belief that the modern Bible is composed of 73 books and that the townspeople are being tested by God — their ordeal forming the material of a new, 74th book. The voices answer the challenge by reminding Khatri of a bag he buried when he first arrived in town, proving they know things no one has told them.

Boyd Stevens explains to Kenny Liu his plan to venture into the woods with a talisman in hopes of finding a way to civilization; Kenny dismisses the plan as a suicide mission. Pressed, Boyd confesses that he is suffering from an extremely rare case of early-onset Parkinson's disease, and that the journey is driven in part by a clock he cannot stop.

Jade Herrera and Jim Matthews repair a radio with scavenged car parts, but it only receives static. Jade suffers a vision of a Civil War-era soldier chasing him and later spots a strange symbol carved into a tree. When Tian-Chen Liu notices his reaction, she shows him a discarded notebook filled with similar drawings — evidence that someone in the town's past was obsessed with the same symbol. Returning home, Jim finds Tabitha Matthews digging a hole in the basement, trying to trace where the town's electricity comes from. At Colony House, a resident named Kevin is shown to be developing a relationship with one of the creatures, unaware of what it truly is.
