Jim Matthews — Engineer & Family Man
Overview
Jim Matthews was the husband of Tabitha Matthews and father of Julie and Ethan, and the family's most determined problem-solver. An engineer by trade, he channeled his grief over the loss of his infant son Thomas into building the town's radio tower — the project that first made contact with whatever controls the town. He was played by Eion Bailey and was a main character in Seasons 1–3 before being killed at the start of Season 4.
Biography
Jim arrives in town with Tabitha, Julie, and Ethan in S1E01, the family already fractured by Thomas's death. He throws himself into practical work: he and Jade Herrera build a radio tower on the edge of town (S1E07–10), and when it transmits, a voice answers that knows Jim's name — warning that "your wife shouldn't be digging that hole" (S1E10). The call haunts him: whatever spoke knew about Tabitha's basement digging and about his family.
In Season 2 Jim and Jade's excavation of the Matthews basement collapses, crushing the bartender Tom (S2E02), an accident that weighs on Jim and poisons his relationship with the dig. He is tormented further by phone calls from "Thomas," the son who died before they came to the town (S3E02) — calls he knows are impossible but cannot ignore. He spends much of Season 3 torn between protecting his family and pursuing answers, clashing with Jade over how much to risk.
At the end of S3E10, at the bottle tree, the Man in Yellow appears and rips open Jim's throat. He dies at the opening of S4E01 from the wound, as the Man in Yellow tells the storywalking Julie that she cannot change the past and laments that he will never see what awaits the townspeople. Jim's body is later displayed with the words "knowledge comes at a cost" written above it (S4E02).
Personality & Traits
Protective, impulsive, and skeptical of anything he cannot engineer. Jim loved his family fiercely and translated that love into action — towers, tunnels, plans — but his need to fix things sometimes put them at greater risk. His grief over Thomas made him vulnerable to the town's taunts.
