The Monsters' Behavior

Overview

The humanoid night creatures that hunt the town after dark — the town's oldest and most intimate threat. They were once the town's first residents, who gained immortality by sacrificing their children (S3E10, Fatima Hassan's reveal). They kill by ripping out throats, speak in the voices of loved ones, smile when they are about to kill, and treat the hunt as a game. They are not mindless: they plan, they mimic, they bargain, and they torture for sport.

Description & Rules

• Nocturnal. They emerge only after dark and sleep by day in the tunnels and caves beneath the town — first confirmed in S1E10 when Tabitha Matthews falls into their lair and Victor Kavanaugh tells her the underground is where the creatures sleep.
• They walk, never run. They approach unhurriedly, even when their prey is escaping. Their confidence is part of the terror — they know the night belongs to them.
• Mimicry. They speak and imitate loved ones. The first kill of the series is a creature posing as an old woman to trick a little girl into opening the door (S1E01). Jasmine befriends Kevin, speaks in a human voice, and is let into Colony House through a window (S1E07).
• The smile. Creatures grin as they close in — the perpetually smiling creature nicknamed Smiley is the archetype; the smile typically precedes the kill.
• Talismans. They cannot enter enclosed spaces protected by the talismans. They will stand at windows and doors, waiting, sometimes for hours.
• They don't eat. Kristi Miller's autopsy finds the creature's insides dry except for bile (S2E07). The throat-ripping is violence, not feeding.
• Torture for sport. They handcuff Boyd to a barn pillar and force him to watch them kill Tian-Chen Liu slowly (S3E01). They take Randall Kirkland, torture him, and leave him alive as a message (S3E04). Randall later notes they usually follow the same routines (S3E04) — ritualistic behavior.
• They can be killed. Smiley dies after Boyd Stevens transfers Martin's blood-worms to him (S2E06) — the only confirmed creature death until Smiley's rebirth.
• Origin & rebirth. They were the first residents, who sacrificed their children to gain immortality (S3E10). Fatima gives birth to a reborn Smiley (S3E10), who grows fast, stalks Fatima in Season 4, corners Kenny Liu (S4E07), and kills Marielle Sinclair in the clinic when a talisman falls (S4E10). Fatima herself transforms into a creature to let the group escape the tunnels (S4E10).
• Not the only threat. Martin warns Boyd the creatures are only "the tip of the spear" (S2E02) — the Man in Yellow is a separate, older horror who devours the dead rather than killing the living.
