Dale — Colony House Agitator

Overview

Dale was a longtime, perpetually aggrieved resident of Colony House whose resentment of newcomers and distrust of Boyd Stevens made him one of the town's most disruptive figures. His insistence on using the faraway bottle tree to escape ended in the town's most publicized death: he was teleported inside the wall of the empty swimming pool (S3E05). He is played by Cliff Saunders.

Biography

Dale is a long-established resident of Colony House, first featured in Season 2 as food shortages begin. In S2E06 he argues that the bus passengers should not be fed from the town's dwindling supplies, accuses Elgin Williams of stealing food, and brandishes a knife; in the ensuing scuffle, Ellis Stevens is stabbed in the side. Dale is imprisoned for the attack (S2E07) and remains resentful through the cicada crisis.

In Season 3 he joins Kenny Liu's foraging group to the new settlement, where he helps free Kristi Miller from a bear trap (S3E03). After Tabitha Matthews escapes the town through the bottle tree, Dale leads the backlash: at a town meeting in S3E05 he turns the majority against Boyd and demands to be taken to the bottle tree so they can escape the way Tabitha did. Despite being warned, he climbs into the tree — and is teleported inside the walls of the town's empty pool, dying instantly. Donna Raines mourns him and entombs his body in a cairn of rocks (S3E06).

Personality & Traits

Angry, suspicious, and quick to blame. Dale saw scarcity as a zero-sum game and resented anyone he considered outsiders — first the bus passengers, then Boyd himself. His stubbornness and need to be right overrode the town's rules and its warnings.
