Colony House

Overview

The town's large communal house and the social heart of the community — one of the two choices offered on Choosing Day, alongside private family homes. Led by Donna Raines, Colony House runs on shared everything: meals, rooms, duties, and grief. It is the site of the town's worst catastrophe — the S1E07 massacre, when a creature was let in through an open window and killed dozens of residents — and it remains the place where the town gathers to celebrate, argue, and survive.

Description & Rules

  • Communal living. Everything is shared; privacy is scarce. New resident Julie Matthews is visibly unsettled by the arrangement (S1E04). Residents eat together, celebrate together, and are assigned to the house by choice, not by family.
  • Leadership. Donna runs the house with authority and pragmatism; she decides who stays, who goes, and who is too dangerous to keep. She forces most bus passengers to shelter at the diner (S2E02), banishes Randall Kirkland to the bus after his outbursts (S2E04), and calls a town-wide meeting to organize the search for Fatima Hassan (S3E09).
  • Defense. A talisman protects the house like every other structure — but the house's size and foot traffic make it vulnerable to human error: the S1E07 massacre began when resident Kevin opened a window for the creature Jasmine. Ellis Stevens and Fatima survived that night by barricading the foyer with a talisman.
  • Gathering place. Colony House hosts the town's communal moments: the party celebrating the first anniversary of Fatima's arrival (S1E07), the radio tower built on its grounds (S1E09), and the sheltering of the bus passengers (S2E03).
  • The basement. Colony House has a hidden basement door that Jade Herrera searches for and cannot find (S4E06); Boyd Stevens breaks down the wall to reveal it (S4E06) — the door leads toward the tunnels and the town's deeper mysteries.
  • Vulnerability. When the food runs out, the house's communal model strains: crops rot (S3E01), residents attempt to steal the animals (S3E01), and Randall's conspiracy talk finds a receptive audience (S2E08).

Connections

Theories & Open Questions

  • Why did the town's entities target Colony House specifically in S1E07 — was it the house, or the party, or the simple fact that a resident was romancing a creature?
  • What lies behind the hidden basement door, and why did Jade's search fail to find it? Is the door part of the tunnel network beneath the town?
  • Does Colony House predate the town's current residents — and if so, who built it, and for whom?
  • Is the communal model safer or more dangerous than private homes? The massacre suggests a single open window can undo the protection of an entire house.
  • With the talismans stolen (S4E10), can a house this large ever be defended again?
