The Children and Reincarnation

Overview

At the very root of the town lies a sacrifice: seven children, killed by the town's first residents so that those residents could live forever as the creatures that now hunt the night. The children persist as an unquiet presence — pale figures who chant the word "Anghkooey" and reach out to specific people across lifetimes. Around them orbits the town's strangest mechanism: reincarnation, in which two souls are reborn again and again — Tabitha Matthews as the latest of a line that includes Miranda Kavanaugh, and Jade Herrera as the latest of a line that includes Christopher — each lifetime drawn back to the town to try, and fail, to save the children.

Description & Rules

• The seven children: sacrificial victims of the first residents, who gained their immortality from the act (revealed S3E10, per Fatima Hassan). They appear as ghostly, chanting children and are described as being "kept prisoner."
• The chant: the children repeat the word "Anghkooey" — meaning unknown. Tabitha first heard chanting children in the tunnels beneath the town (S1E10) and later showed Jade Herrera the same tunnel entrance where she saw the symbol and the chanting children (S2E08).
• The reincarnation cycle: Tabitha = Miranda; Jade = Christopher. Earlier incarnations include a Civil War-era soldier (Jade's vision, S1E06) and a man killed by a falling rock (S4E05). Every incarnation tried to save the children and was killed by the townspeople of their era (S4E05).
• The reveal: the mechanism surfaced when the numbered scraps from the bottle tree were played as music, summoning the children (S3E10). The numbers are musical notes; the bottle tree is the instrument.
• The roots: the bottle tree's roots connect to an underground burial chamber where the children were sacrificed (S4E09–10). Jade found the tunnel where they died (S4E05) and, with Tabitha, the children's bones (S4E09).
• The symbol: the recurring pictograph (trees/circle) that obsesses Jade is connected to the seven children and the reincarnation cycle — it marks the places where the town's truth is buried.
• The creatures as beneficiaries: the monsters who kill every night are the descendants/first residents who traded the children's lives for their own unending ones — making every night kill a re-enactment of the original sin.
