Martin and the Dungeon Arc

Overview

The dungeon arc is the central mystery of Season 2. After being pushed into a farway tree by Sara, Boyd Stevens finds himself trapped in a mineshaft and is pulled out by an unseen stranger — a ragged, emaciated man chained to a dungeon wall who calls himself Martin and begs Boyd to kill him. Boyd refuses and tries to free him instead. Martin warns that the creatures of the forest are only "the tip of the spear," and as a music box on the dungeon floor begins playing by itself, Martin seizes Boyd and transfers worm-like parasites into him before dying. Those blood-worms let Boyd kill the creature known as Smiley in S2E6 — but they also released the cicada/music-box entity that nearly killed Julie, Marielle, and Randall. The arc resolves in S2E10 when Boyd returns to the dungeon and destroys the music box, waking the three from their comas.

Timeline

  • S2E1 — With the help of an unseen stranger, Boyd climbs out of the mineshaft. He discovers the stranger is an emaciated man chained to a wall in a dungeon, who asks Boyd to kill him.
  • S2E2 — Boyd refuses to kill Martin and tries to free him instead. Martin warns him the forest creatures are only the "tip of the spear." A music box on the ground starts playing on its own; Martin grabs Boyd's arm and transfers worm-like parasites to him, then dies. Boyd finds himself back in the forest.
  • S2E6 — After Dale stabs Ellis and Boyd is needed to transfuse blood, Boyd walks into the night and deliberately passes the parasites to the grinning creature, killing it — the creature fans later nickname "Smiley." Ellis survives.
  • S2E7–8 — The music-box entity begins manifesting: Marielle dreams of the creature and the music box; Elgin is drowned in bath visions by the Kimono Woman; the chant spreads — "They touch, they break, they steal. No one here is free." Kenny's dream phone delivers the same words.
  • S2E9 — The cicadas kill Paula in her sleep. Music-box music plays over the town's radio. Julie, Marielle, and Randall all lapse into comas. Elgin recalls the Boy in White's warning: "Here they come, they come for three, unless you stop the melody."
  • S2E10 — Sara tells Boyd that he caused the entity by releasing it from the dungeon, and that he must destroy the music box. Boyd returns to the ruins and finds himself back in the dungeon, where Julie, Marielle, and Randall are chained and tortured by an unseen force. He ignores a vision of Abby urging him to give up, destroys the box, and the three wake from their comas. Separately, Jade has a vision of the seven chanting children beneath the tunnels.
  • S3E8 — Exploring the ruins with Ethan, Julie has a vision of the dungeon, seeing Martin get her to save Boyd from the mineshaft — the first glimpse that her storywalking ability (see Julies_Storywalking_Arc) is tied to this place.

Key Developments

  • Martin's identity was never explained: he was chained in the dungeon beneath the ruins, knew Boyd's name, and understood the town's true scale ("tip of the spear").
  • The blood-worms were a double-edged gift: they killed Smiley but released the cicada entity that had been imprisoned with the music box.
  • The music box was the entity's anchor — it played when the entity acted, and destroying it ended the comas.
  • The dungeon is a recurring nexus: the music box, Martin's chains, the chained coma victims, and later Julie's storywalking vision all connect to it.
  • The arc established that the town's threats come in layers: the creatures were never the whole story.

Characters Involved

Impact on the Story

This arc rewired the show's mythology. The blood-worms gave Boyd the only confirmed way to kill a creature — the death of Smiley — which set up the creature's rebirth through Fatima Hassan's pregnancy in Season 3 (see The_Fatima_Pregnancy_and_Smileys_Rebirth). The music-box entity introduced the town's second-tier threats and the rule that the town's horrors are layered. And the dungeon itself became a touchstone for later revelations: the ruins above it, the vision of the seven children, and Julie's storywalking all trace back to this place.

Resolution / Current Status

Resolved. The immediate arc closed in S2E10: Martin is dead, the music box is destroyed, and Julie, Marielle, and Randall woke from their comas. However, the dungeon's deeper meaning remains open — Martin's true identity, who chained him, and what the music box actually was are never explained, and the place resurfaces in Julie's S3E8 vision as a doorway into the past.
