Henry Kavanaugh — Victor's Father
Overview
Henry Kavanaugh is Victor Kavanaugh's father, who spent decades in the real world believing his wife and son were dead. Found by Tabitha Matthews, he is drawn into the town in Season 3 and finally reunited with Victor after forty years. In Season 4 he is tormented by visions of waking from a coma in the real world — visions that nearly drive him to kill his own son.
Biography
Henry's family vanished in 1983, when his wife Miranda Kavanaugh and their children Victor and Eloise disappeared. He grieved alone for decades. Tabitha, waking in a Camden, Maine hospital after escaping the town, found his address on Victor's lunchbox and went to his house (S3E01). Henry showed her Miranda's paintings — detailed premonitions of the Township and its residents — and explained that Miranda claimed to see visions and believed she was chosen to free the "children in the tower" (S3E02). He revealed a replica bottle tree in his backyard and admitted Miranda's visions began at the original bottle tree; driving toward it, the two were struck by an oncoming vehicle and woke in an ambulance that was pulled into the town (S3E03–04).
Inside the town, Henry and Victor finally saw each other and tearfully reunited after forty years apart (S3E05). He explored the tunnels with Victor, where they found the ventriloquist doll Jasper (S3E06), and grew concerned by Victor's obsession with it (S3E07). He used his own experience of grief to calm a furious Jim Matthews at the bar (S3E08), and Victor took him to Miranda's grave, confessing his guilt over her death (S3E10).
In Season 4, Victor told Henry that the Man in Yellow had devoured Miranda (S4E04), and Henry broke down over the truth (S4E05). Sophia manipulated him into drinking and secretly added a drop of her own blood to his liquor (S4E06). Henry then began experiencing vivid visions of waking in the real world after a coma (S4E07), and began to believe the town might be something he created in his own mind (S4E08). His vision demanded that he remain in it — which would require him to kill Victor (S4E09). In the finale he prepared to do exactly that, but Victor subdued him when Ethan appeared (S4E10).
Personality & Traits
Gentle, lonely, and guilt-ridden, with an alcoholic streak. Henry is desperate to reclaim lost time with his son; his love for Victor is real, but the town's visions have made him dangerous to the very person he came back for.
