The Music Box

Overview

A music box that stood in the dungeon where Martin was chained, playing a lullaby whenever the entity behind it acted. Its melody manifests cicadas and marks three victims — Julie Matthews, Marielle Sinclair, and Randall Kirkland — who are attacked in their sleep and fall into comas while the entity tortures them in a nightmarish version of the dungeon. Boyd Stevens destroyed the box in S2E10, ending the immediate threat and waking the victims.

Description & Rules

• The melody. The box plays a music-box lullaby. The same melody is broadcast over the town's radio in S2E09 — the only transmission since the radio tower's ominous S1E10 contact — and it stops the creatures in their tracks before the cicada attack begins.
• The chant. Those afflicted hear and repeat: "They touch, they break, they steal. No one here is free." Kenny Liu hears the chant from a dream phone call (S2E08); Reggie's wife repeats it as the cicadas kill her in her sleep (S2E09).
• Three victims. The Boy in White warns through Elgin Williams's dream: "Here they come, they come for three, unless you stop the melody." The three are Julie, Marielle, and Randall. All three lapse into comas and are seen chained in the dungeon when Boyd returns in S2E10.
• The nursery rhyme. Bus driver Bakta reveals her grandmother sang a nursery rhyme combining both phrases — the melody and the chant predate the town's current residents.
• The destruction. Boyd, guided by Sara Myers's voices, returns to the ruins and the dungeon. He overcomes a vision of Abby Stevens urging him to let the entity win, destroys the box, and the three victims awaken from their comas (S2E10).
• Aftermath. The threat appeared ended, but Marielle remains scarred: in S4E05 her dungeon experience returns as vivid visions, and she fears "something ancient" will never release them, even after death.

• Was the music box a vessel for the entity, a key that held it, or merely a signal? Destroying it stopped the cicadas — but the entity itself was never seen or named.
• Why those three victims? Julie, Marielle, and Randall had each touched the town's mysteries — is the entity's targeting connected to knowledge, like everything else in the town?
• What is the full lullaby, and does it encode the same information as the bottle tree numbers?
• Is the entity the same force as the voices, the Kimono Woman, or the Man in Yellow — or a fourth power the town has not yet named?
• If "they come for three," was the cycle interrupted for good, or merely postponed?
