Tobey — Jade's Traveling Companion

Overview

Tobey (listed in cast credits as Tobey McCray) is the man who arrived in the town with Jade Herrera in the car that collided with the Matthews family's RV. He became one of the town's earliest Season 1 victims — killed not by the creatures but by Sara Myers, acting on the voices in her head.

Biography

Tobey and Jade were traveling together when a fallen tree forced them onto the road that loops into the town; the collision with the Matthews' RV wrecked both vehicles (S1E01). Tobey was taken to the clinic with the injured. That night, at the clinic, Sara — compelled by the mysterious voices that had begun speaking to her — killed Tobey, then opened the door and allowed the creatures to enter, resulting in the deaths of Bing-Qian Liu and his caretaker (S1E02).

When Jade finally woke, he refused to accept the town's reality, insisting the whole situation was an elaborate escape room staged by Tobey (S1E03) — a remark that speaks to their closeness. Tobey is buried in the town; after Jade caused a disturbance at Colony House, he was taken to Tobey's grave to confront the truth (S1E03).

Personality & Traits

Tobey has almost no screen time and is characterized only through Jade: the two were close friends or colleagues, and Tobey's death is the fact Jade cannot absorb. His killing also quietly introduced the town's darker rule — residents can be as dangerous as the creatures.
