Fatima's Pregnancy and Smiley's Rebirth

Overview

Fatima Hassan, who had been told she could never have children, becomes pregnant shortly after Ellis Stevens proposes — but the pregnancy is impossible from the start. It does not show on ultrasound, starves her body, and replaces her appetite with cravings for rotten food and human blood. The "baby" is in fact a vessel: a means for Smiley, the grinning creature killed by Boyd Stevens's blood-worms in S2E6, to be reborn. Guided by the [Kimono Woman], Elgin Williams traps Fatima in the cellar beneath the ruins, where she gives birth to the reborn creature in S3E10. In Season 4 the reborn Smiley grows rapidly, stalks Fatima, and draws her into a strange kinship that ends with her transformation into a creature herself.

Timeline

  • S3E2 — Fatima seeks help at the clinic; Kristi Miller finds her severely malnourished. Unable to stomach normal food, Fatima impulsively eats rotten vegetables that satisfy her hunger.
  • S3E3Tillie discovers the cravings and attempts a tarot reading to comfort her; a crow smashes into the window as an omen.
  • S3E4 — Alone with the dying Nicky, Fatima impulsively consumes her blood.
  • S3E5Ellis catches Fatima eating rotten vegetables; she admits something is wrong with the baby.
  • S3E6 — An ultrasound scan reveals Fatima is not pregnant at all.
  • S3E7 — Fatima confesses her cravings to Kristi, who believes the pregnancy is psychosomatic. In intense pain at the greenhouse, Fatima loses control and stabs Tillie to death.
  • S3E8 — Boyd hides Fatima in an empty cabin and conceals the truth of Tillie's death. She has a vision of the Kimono Woman. Elgin follows the Kimono Woman's polaroid instructions, finds the cabin, and secretly leads Fatima to the cellar, trapping her behind the hidden door.
  • S3E9 — Elgin feeds Fatima his blood, which she hungrily accepts; her pregnancy progresses rapidly. Fatima finds a hidden hatch in the cellar floor, but the Kimono Woman holds her down to keep her quiet.
  • S3E10 — The Kimono Woman helps Fatima give birth, then disappears with the amniotic sac as Boyd and Ellis arrive. Fatima reveals the creatures were once the town's first residents, who gained immortality by sacrificing their children. Boyd descends through the hatch and witnesses Smiley being reborn.
  • S4E1 — Boyd shows Kenny Liu the reborn Smiley in the caves, explaining that this is what Fatima gave birth to — proof the town's horrors reproduce through its residents.
  • S4E4 — Fatima is found shaping a large mound of dirt; she explains she is creating a golem to protect herself from Smiley, to whom she feels a strange, unwilling connection.
  • S4E7 — Kenny stabs a creature with a totem to no effect and is cornered by Smiley; Fatima manages to control Smiley, saving Kenny's life.
  • S4E8 — Fatima reveals markings on her body like those of the creatures and that her pulse reads as clinically dead. She fears she is becoming one of them, though she comes to believe her control over Smiley could help the town.
  • S4E10 — Trapped in the tunnels with Boyd and Ellis after rescuing Jade and Tabitha, Fatima transforms into a creature to allow the group to escape with the children's bones.

Key Developments

  • The pregnancy was never real — Fatima was an incubator for a creature's rebirth, orchestrated by the Kimono Woman.
  • Smiley's rebirth proves the creatures can reproduce through the town's residents, not just recruit new ones.
  • Fatima's cravings (rotten food, blood) and her declining vitals tracked the creature inside her taking over.
  • Her bond with Smiley gave her temporary control over him — a power the creatures' victims never had before.
  • Her transformation at the end of S4 came as a deliberate sacrifice to get the group — and the children's bones — out of the collapsing tunnels.

Characters Involved

Impact on the Story

This arc is the hinge between Season 2 and the endgame of Season 4. The blood-worms Boyd used to kill Smiley in S2E6 created the debt the town paid in S3–S4: the creature returned through Fatima. Her birth reveal — that the creatures are immortal first residents who sacrificed their children — directly seeded the children/"Anghkooey" mythology that drives the bottle-tree plan, and Fatima's control over Smiley proved the creatures can be opposed. Her transformation in S4E10 cost the town one of its most beloved residents even as it secured the escape of the bones.

Resolution / Current Status

The pregnancy arc itself is resolved: the impossible pregnancy ended with Smiley's rebirth in S3E10, and Fatima's descent ended with her transformation in S4E10. What remains ongoing is everything after: Smiley survived the finale (he fatally wounded Marielle Sinclair in the clinic), and Fatima — now a creature, yet apparently still herself — is alive in the tunnels with Boyd and Ellis. Whether her transformation is permanent, whether she can revert, and what her creature nature means for the town's fight are open questions.
