Father Khatri — The Town's Priest

Overview

Father Rudra Khatri was the town's spiritual leader and moral compass until his death during the Colony House massacre. He remains a presence afterward, appearing to Boyd Stevens as a vision at crucial moments — most notably in S4E08, when he counsels that some people may have to die.

Biography

Khatri was among the town's longest-tenured residents, present since before Boyd's arrival: an S1E08 flashback shows him leading Boyd, his wife Abby Stevens, and Ellis Stevens to a hidden cellar on their first night. He guided newcomers — explaining Choosing Day and the Box to Jim Matthews and Tabitha Matthews (S1E03) — and served as Boyd's confessor and conscience. When the town learned of Sara Myers' voices, Khatri took her into his custody (S1E06), holding her in a cellar and arguing that the town is a test from God, with their ordeal forming a new, 74th book of scripture. When Sara's voices reminded him of the bag he had buried on his own arrival, he was forced to admit that he too had secrets. He pushed Boyd to include Sara on the forest expedition (S1E07).

On the night of the Colony House massacre, Khatri helped Boyd let survivors into the sheriff's station — and a creature killed him at the door (S1E07). Death did not end his role: Boyd has seen him in visions since, discussing Sara and Kenny (S2E04) and, in S4E08, telling Boyd that escaping may require that "some people may have to die."

Personality & Traits

Calm, philosophical, and pragmatic to the point of moral ambiguity. Khatri believed in the town's meaning even as it killed him, and his posthumous counsel consistently pushes Boyd toward hard choices.
