Eloise Kavanaugh — Victor's Lost Sister
Overview
Eloise Kavanaugh is the younger sister of Victor Kavanaugh and daughter of Miranda Kavanaugh. As a small child, she followed her mother to the bottle tree on the day of the massacre that ended the original residents and was never seen again. She appears only in flashbacks and childhood memories.
Biography
In the early 1970s, Victor, Eloise, and Miranda lived in the town. On the day of the massacre, Miranda hid Victor in a cellar and took Eloise with her, going to the tower to "save the children" — as Victor later explains to Tabitha over his drawings (S2E08). Neither returned. Victor emerged the next day to find the bodies of the residents and was met by the Boy in White (S1E04).
Tabitha Matthews, revealed in S3 to be Miranda's reincarnation, retraced the family's story through Victor's drawings, the tunnels, and the real-world artifacts in Maine — while Victor, with Henry Kavanaugh's return, was forced to revisit the childhood he had walled off (S3E05–07). Victor eventually told Henry that the Man in Yellow had arrived like everyone else and, after the residents died, began devouring them — including Miranda (S4E04). Eloise's specific fate was never witnessed; Victor believes she died with her mother. The show never shows her body or a grave.
Personality & Traits
Eloise is seen only as a small girl in flashbacks — old enough to go with her mother, young enough to be the sibling Victor still mourns. In Victor's memory she is inseparable from the day everything was lost.
Relationships
- Victor Kavanaugh — brother; her loss is the core of his trauma.
- Miranda Kavanaugh — mother; took Eloise with her to the tower (S2E08).
- Henry Kavanaugh — father; her fate hangs over their S3 reunion.
- The Man in Yellow — devoured Miranda (per Victor, S4E04); possibly responsible for Eloise as well.
Key Events
- Leaves the cellar with Miranda while Victor hides; neither returns (S2E08 flashback).
- Features in Victor's recovered childhood memories, including the Jasper-day memory of his last days with his family (S3E07).
- Victor confirms Miranda's death by the Man in Yellow; Eloise's death is presumed but never shown (S4E04).
Status & Fate
Deceased (presumed) — the canon status table records Eloise as killed in childhood. Her death is never depicted on screen: she simply left with her mother and never came back, making her disappearance one of the town's defining losses.
Theories & Open Questions
- No body or grave is ever shown, and Victor's memory is established as unreliable (S3E07–08) — the show leaves room for Eloise to have survived in some form. (Not confirmed in-show.)
- Whether the Man in Yellow devoured Eloise as he did Miranda (S4E04) is never stated.
- If Eloise survived, she would be an elderly woman in the present day; no canon candidate for her is identified.
