The Boy in White

Overview

A young boy dressed entirely in white appears to select residents of the town — Victor Kavanaugh as a child, Sara Myers, Ethan Matthews, Tabitha Matthews, and Elgin Williams in dreams. Unlike the creatures, he is not hostile — he seems to guide, pointing chosen people toward the town's secrets: the faraway trees, the lighthouse, the bottle tree. But his help is never free, and his final loyalties remain unknown. He appears to be locked in opposition to the Man in Yellow, taunting his "Sophia" form with the promise that she will "finally lose" (S4E10).

Description & Rules

Appearance: a small boy in white clothing; appears to be a ghost or spirit of the town, not one of the night creatures.
Selective visibility: he shows himself only to specific people — Victor (as a child), Sara, Ethan, Tabitha, and Elgin (in dreams). He invited child-Victor to play in the aftermath of the original massacre (S1E04).
Guide to the faraway trees: he led Sara to a faraway tree (S1E10) — the trees that teleport those who enter them.
The lighthouse push: he pushed Tabitha from the lighthouse window — "this is the only way" (S2E10) — sending her out of the town entirely and into the real world (Camden, Maine).
Protector of the bottle tree: he stopped Victor from chopping down the bottle tree (S3E09) — a tree whose roots reach the children's burial chamber, and whose numbers, played as music, summon the children.
Warnings: he told Tabitha she cannot return home via the lighthouse and that time is running out (S4E03); he warned Victor again in S4E09.
Opposition to the Man in Yellow: his line to "Sophia" — "you will finally lose" (S4E10) — frames him as the Man in Yellow's direct antagonist, and possibly the guardian of the children's cause.

S1E04 — First appearance (in flashback): child-Victor, surrounded by the corpses of the original residents, is invited to play by the Boy in White. In the present, Ethan recognizes the boy from one of Victor's drawings.
S1E10 — He leads Sara to the faraway tree.
S2E10 — He pushes Tabitha from the lighthouse: "this is the only way." She wakes in the real world.
S3E09 — He stops Victor from chopping down the bottle tree.
S4E03 — He tells Tabitha she cannot return home through the lighthouse, and that time is running out.
S4E09 — He warns Victor of the coming plan.
S4E10 — He tells Sophia: "you will finally lose."

Theories & Open Questions

Who is he? A ghost of one of the sacrificed children? A guardian spirit? An agent of the town itself?
Why does he help? Every gift he gives (faraway trees, the lighthouse) comes with a cost — is he genuinely benevolent, or is he manipulating the cycle toward his own end?
Why "you will finally lose"? His taunt to Sophia suggests a long-standing war between him and the Man in Yellow — possibly over the children themselves.
Why did he say Tabitha can't go home through the lighthouse? The escape route may be one-way, or may have been closed once she used it.
Is he the reason the children chant "Anghkooey"? — or is he trying to stop them?
