S2E3 — "Tether"
Air date: May 7, 2023 · Director: Alexandra La Roche · Writer: John Griffin (story by Griffin & Jeff Pinkner)
Synopsis
The town tries to return to routine in the aftermath of the bus massacre. Boyd Stevens privately studies his arm for the worms he saw beneath his skin, and reassures Ellis Stevens, who is shaken by Fatima Hassan's growing despair after watching people die the night before. Boyd teases Ellis about proposing, and tells him to hold onto Fatima — the episode's "tether." Kristi Miller patches up Jim Matthews, who has cracked ribs and a bruised lung, while Tabitha Matthews and Jim quietly reconcile.
Out in the forest, Kenny Liu and Ellis find the missing iron rod from one of the animal traps — pinning a girl's head to a tree. The girl, a bus passenger named Kelly, is still alive; the creatures staked her and left her to die, having killed her companion Brian in front of her the night before. Kristi determines that even in a hospital the surgery would take fifteen hours; the only mercy is a quick death. Boyd arrives and takes the burden himself, pulling the rod free and killing Kelly as Kristi holds her hands.
Elsewhere, Victor Kavanaugh finds his room ransacked and confronts Jade Herrera over the stolen violin; when Jade presses him about the symbol in the journal — the one in a photo with a young Victor in the background — Victor refuses to explain and tells him to stay away. Tabitha Matthews begins seeing two ghoulish children who were not there; she confesses to Julie that she has been having visions since Thomas's death. Ellis proposes to Fatima in the diner, and she accepts. Boyd, visiting Abby's grave, wonders aloud how Martin knew her name. In the church, Kenny searches Father Khatri's belongings for funeral readings and finds Sara Myers hiding in the basement.

New Information / Reveals
- The creatures staged Kelly's death as a trap: the iron rod was taken from the town's own animal traps, and she was left alive to suffer.
- Sara was transported by a faraway tree directly into the church basement — faraway trees can return travelers to the town itself.
- Boyd's worms are real and persistent; he is hiding his condition from the town.
- Martin knew Abby's name and her "dream" theory — knowledge he could not have gotten from Boyd.
- The Boy in White told Sara about the trees and wanted to help, "but is unsure how."
- Victor draws what he sees because "the pictures remember"; his drawings are a record of the town's strangeness.
