S2E1 — "Strangers in a Strange Land"

Synopsis

The second season opens moments after the first-season finale. As storm clouds gather over the town, Boyd Stevens wakes at the bottom of a dry well — the destination of the faraway tree he was pushed into by Sara on the Boy in White's instruction. Unable to climb out on his own, he hears a voice from above offering help in exchange for a promise.

Meanwhile, a passenger bus rolls into town carrying roughly two dozen unsuspecting newcomers. Among them are the driver Bakta, the abrasive Randall Kirkland, the dream-haunted Elgin Williams, pediatric nurse Marielle Sinclair, and the elderly Tillie. Elgin, frightened by a nightmare he had on the road, tries to convince the bus to turn around, but it is already trapped in the town's looping roads. At Colony House, the residents are scrambling: lightbulbs explode during the storm, glass injures Clara's eye, and Jade Herrera helps haul the radio equipment indoors before spotting the bus from a window.

In town, Jim Matthews discovers that the basement hole Tabitha Matthews was digging has collapsed and filled with debris. Julie rallies volunteers — Ellis, Tom, and bus passengers Randall and Brick — to dig her out, but the house gives way again, trapping Jim, Tom, and Brick in the rubble. Donna Raines and Kenny Liu try to explain the town's danger to Bakta, who refuses to believe them; when Bakta attempts to drive away, Donna shoots out the bus's tires, and several panicked passengers flee into the evening. The rest are corralled into the diner for the night.

Beneath the town, Victor Kavanaugh leads Tabitha through the tunnels where the creatures sleep, past a suitcase holding a wedding dress and a chamber of stone piles and stick-blocked archways. Tabitha glimpses a ghoulish child in one archway, and when the creatures begin to stir, the two barely escape into the forest, where Victor takes the lead. Back in the shaft, Boyd climbs out with the stranger's help and finds the voice belongs to an emaciated, shackled man in a dungeon — a man who asks Boyd to kill him. In town, Kristi and Marielle spot each other across the chaos: Marielle is the fiancée Kristi left behind, and the two embrace in tears.
