The Talismans

Overview

Carved stones bearing a distinctive runic pictograph that protect any enclosed space they are hung inside. When a talisman is present, the night creatures cannot cross the threshold — the entire town's survival strategy is built around hanging them in homes, the clinic, the sheriff's station, and Colony House. Boyd Stevens discovered them in a cave in the woods during a scavenging trip (S1E08 flashback), and their introduction transformed the town from hiding in root cellars to living openly in houses. At the end of Season 4, the Man in Yellow collected every talisman and threw them into a farway tree, leaving the town unprotected for the first time since Boyd's discovery (S4E10).

Description & Rules

• Appearance: rough hand-sized carved stones, each engraved with an intricate pictograph. No two are described as identical, but they all share the same style.
• Function: a talisman hung inside an enclosed space creates a barrier the creatures physically cannot cross. Doors and windows become safe; the creatures gather outside, watching and waiting.
• Limits: the protection depends on the talisman staying in place. When a talisman falls inside the clinic, Smiley enters and kills Marielle Sinclair (S4E10). A talisman hung after danger is already inside does nothing — Boyd hangs one in the barn in S3E01 only to discover the creatures were already hiding there.
• The symbol: the talisman pictograph is a different symbol from the Symbol that obsesses Jade Herrera — a distinction Jade himself notes early in his investigation.
• Number: limited. The town's supply comes from a single cave, and residents treat each stone as precious.
• Against the Man in Yellow: the talismans are never shown to stop him — he steals them outright in S4E10, suggesting the barrier is keyed to the creatures specifically, not to every entity in the town.

Appearances / History

• S1E01–E02 — The creatures surround the Matthews family's crashed RV. Boyd explains to the newcomers that talismans placed inside enclosed spaces protect against the creatures, and the group barely reaches Colony House before nightfall.
• S1E07 — During the Colony House massacre, Ellis Stevens and Fatima Hassan survive by barricading the foyer with a talisman while the creatures swarm the house around them.
• S1E08 (flashback) — Boyd, lost overnight in the woods, takes shelter in a cave surrounded by creatures and finds the talismans hanging there. He takes them and returns to town, changing the town's way of life.
• S3E01 — Boyd hangs a talisman in the barn as the creatures release the livestock; several creatures are already inside and handcuff him before torturing Tian-Chen Liu to death.
• S4E10 — A talisman falls in the clinic and Smiley enters, fatally wounding Marielle. Clara and the Man in Yellow (as "Sophia") collect the town's talismans, and the Man in Yellow throws them into a farway tree — the season ends with the town defenseless.
