S4E2 — "Fray"
Air date: April 26, 2026 · Director: Jack Bender · Writer: John Griffin (story by Griffin & Jeff Pinkner)
Synopsis
The morning after Jim's death, Julie Matthews and Ethan Matthews discover their father's body hanging in the barn, with the phrase "knowledge comes at a cost" written beside it. The discovery devastates the family; Tabitha Matthews is left shattered by the confirmation that the Man in Yellow took Jim from her. The message itself — a taunt left by the entity — suggests that the town exacts a price from those who get too close to the truth.
Jade Herrera brings the news to Boyd Stevens: their vision at the bottle tree was real, and the children must be saved — that is why Jim died. Boyd, trying to make sense of the pattern, theorizes that whenever the residents discover something important, the town pushes them away to prevent further discoveries, as if the place itself is trying to keep its secrets. Jade then tells Tabitha that Jim's death proves what they saw is real, but an enraged Tabitha lashes out, saying that Jade should have been the one to die instead.
Elsewhere, Sophia continues to embed herself in the town's life. Looking for new glasses, she tells Sara Myers that keeping the belongings of the dead is a way to remember them — a piece of advice that carries a hidden edge, since Sara still keeps the things of those she has lost or killed. Julie, grappling with her ability, asks Randall Kirkland for help: she travels back in time using the ruins, landing on the night the cicadas attacked Randall. When a creature is about to kill her in the past, Randall pulls her back to the present, demonstrating both the power and the danger of her storywalking.
In town, Boyd arrests Dani Acosta for stealing the ambulance, which she believed she could use to leave town. The arrest deepens the tension between the police officer and the sheriff, and shows how desperate the residents have become to escape. Ethan, meanwhile, leaves home and goes to the RV, where he sees a vision of his dead father. Jim tells him that the Lake of Tears in his vision is real, and that Ethan must find it — sending the boy on a quest that will define much of the season.
