Ethan Matthews — The Boy Who Sees
Overview
Ethan Matthews is the youngest child of Jim Matthews and Tabitha Matthews, brother of Julie Matthews. He arrives in the town as a boy with a broken leg (S1E01) and processes the town's horrors through stories, dreams, and the Boy in White, who appears to him. After Jim's death he quietly prepares — heartbreakingly — for the possibility of being left alone.
Biography
Ethan's injury in the crash forced his family to accept the town's help, and the town accepted him: he is one of the few children in a community of adults. He recognized the Boy in White from Victor's drawings (S1E04), an early sign of his connection to the town's strangeness. He read fantasy books — Jade Herrera explained the significance of symbols in a journal to him (S2E01) — and, remarkably, asked to see Sara Myers even after learning the voices had told her to kill him (S2E05). Victor Kavanaugh tried to push him away, warning that bad things happen to his friends, but the two grew close instead. During Season 3, a voice on the phone told Ethan that Tabitha would need to be rescued (S3E04).
After Jim's murder, Ethan received a vision of his father at the family's RV, telling him that the Lake of Tears from his dreams is real and that he must find it (S4E02). He and Victor set out on a quest for the Lake of Tears, joined by Jade (S4E03). He accompanied Victor to the Man in Yellow's car, where Victor found a sack of teeth and grew terrified that history was repeating — that Ethan, like Victor once was, might end up alone (S4E07). Ethan asked Victor to help him prepare for exactly that (S4E08), but Tabitha reassured him she would get them out. In the finale, his sudden appearance is what allowed Victor to subdue his father Henry (S4E10). Throughout Season 4 his books — with their marked places — became the key to Julie's storywalking (S4E02–04).
Personality & Traits

- Whether Victor's fear is prophetic — is Ethan fated to end up alone, as Victor once did?
