The Lake of Tears Quest

Overview

The Lake of Tears enters the story as a vision: after Jim's death, Ethan Matthews sees his father in the RV, who tells him the lake from his vision is real and that he must find it. Ethan sets out with Victor Kavanaugh, joined by Jade Herrera, on a quest that leads them to a lake holding enormous straw dolls — beings born from a man's nightmares and thrown into the water decades ago. The quest converges with the town's larger endgame: Boyd Stevens's vision-driven decision to uproot the bottle tree, descend into the darkness beneath its roots, and escape with the sacrificed children's bones. It ends with darkness falling over the town as the tree comes down and an earthquake swallows the tunnels.
