The Voices and Kimono Woman
Overview
Two entities speak to the town's residents through channels that mimic the human mind. The voices are heard by Sara Myers — disembodied whispers that told her to kill, guided her through the forest, and now direct her through "Sophia's" tests. The Kimono Woman is a corpse in a kimono who haunts Elgin Williams, drowning him in bath visions, guiding him with polaroids, and ultimately using him to trap a pregnant Fatima Hassan in the cellar — where she delivered the reborn creature known as Smiley. Together they form the town's second channel of supernatural communication: not the creatures who kill, but the voices that direct.
Description & Rules
The Voices (Sara's voices)
- Whispered instructions heard by Sara. They told her to kill Ethan Matthews (S1E04–05) — a command that led her to kill Tobey (S1E02) and accidentally Nathan Myers (S1E05).
- They proved their reality to Father Khatri by recalling a bag he buried when he first arrived (S1E04).
- In the forest, a new female voice warned: "there are worse things in the forest than the creatures" (S1E09) — pointing Sara toward the faraway trees and the town's deeper truths.
- In Season 4 they return, directing Sara through the tests of "Sophia" (the Man in Yellow in disguise) (S4E04), and they warned that Fatima had little time left (S3E09).
The Kimono Woman
- A decomposing woman in a kimono who haunts Elgin: drowning him in bath visions (S2E07) and guiding him through polaroids his camera produces (S3E06–08).
- She claims she can help everyone go home (S3E06).
- She directed Elgin to trap Fatima in the cellar (S3E08–09) and, when Fatima gave birth, delivered the reborn Smiley — then disappeared with the amniotic sac (S3E10).
Fatima's pregnancy
- Fatima's pregnancy was dismissed as psychosomatic — an ultrasound showed no fetus (S3E07) — yet her cravings (rotten vegetables, blood) were real.
- Elgin fed her his blood, accelerating the pregnancy (S3E09).
- The child was Smiley reborn: the creature killed by Boyd Stevens' blood-worms (S2E06), gestated inside Fatima and born through the Kimono Woman's intervention (S3E10).
- Fatima's transformation continued into Season 4, ending with her becoming a creature herself to save the group (S4E10).

Theories & Open Questions
- Who speaks through the voices? The relationship between Sara's voices, the Kimono Woman, and the Man in Yellow is one of the tracker's key unknowns.
- Why did the voices want Ethan dead? And why did they later change course and guide Sara toward the truth?
- Is the Kimono Woman a creature, a ghost, or something else? She delivered a creature's rebirth — was she midwife to the town's power, or its prisoner?
- Was the pregnancy ever real? Psychosomatic per the ultrasound, but physically transformative — the town's biology doesn't obey ordinary rules.
- Where did she go with the amniotic sac? Her disappearance (S3E10) leaves her agenda open.
