S4E1 — "The Arrival"
Air date: April 19, 2026 · Director: Jack Bender · Writer: John Griffin (story by Griffin & Jeff Pinkner)
Synopsis
The fourth season opens in the immediate aftermath of Jim's murder at the bottle tree. As Jim Matthews lies dying with his throat ripped open, the Man in Yellow turns to Julie Matthews and warns her that no matter how hard she tries, she cannot change the past. Julie vanishes, pulled back to her own time, and Jim dies alone as the Man in Yellow laments that he will never see what awaits the townspeople. The season premiere then cuts to the outside world, where a lone pastor encounters the fallen tree blocking the road — the same tree that has drawn travelers into the town for generations. His detour leads him through the looping roads and into town, where his car crashes into the sheriff's station.
Meanwhile, the discovery that ended the previous season continues to fracture the town. Jade Herrera urges Tabitha Matthews to tell the townspeople about what they learned at the bottle tree — that she and Jade are reincarnations of Miranda Kavanaugh and Christopher, and that the sacrificed children can be saved. Tabitha refuses, doubting the reality of the vision even after living it. Kenny Liu goes to the caves to find Boyd Stevens, and together they encounter Smiley, the creature reborn from Fatima's pregnancy. Boyd explains to Kenny that this is what Fatima gave birth to — proof that the town's horrors reproduce themselves through its own residents. The crash at the sheriff's station adds two newcomers: the pastor, unconscious and injured, and a woman named Sophia who claims to have been his passenger.
Boyd, still reeling from the night in the cellar and the revelation about Smiley, loses all hope. Kristi Miller and Ellis Stevens try to steady him, reminding him that the town still looks to him as its leader. That night, Tabitha, Julie, and Ethan wait at home for Jim to return, unaware of his fate; as they sit in the kitchen, objects begin moving erratically on their own, a disturbance the family cannot explain. While Kenny sleeps, Sophia visits the unconscious pastor. Revealing herself to be the Man in Yellow in disguise — a shapeshifted form intended to deceive the townspeople and let the entity blend in among them — she suffocates the pastor to death, eliminating the one person who could expose her.
