Elgin Williams — The Kimono Woman's Vessel
Overview
Elgin Williams is a gentle bus passenger haunted by dreams and visions of the Kimono Woman, who turned him into her agent — leading him to trap Fatima Hassan in the cellar so she could give birth to Smiley. He spent the rest of his life seeking redemption before Sophia killed him in the Season 4 finale.
Biography
Elgin arrived on the bus in S2E01 having dreamed of the town's landmarks on the journey — Fatima took him to the Brundles, which he recognized from the dream (S2E03). Quiet and withdrawn, he talked with Sara Myers at the church (S2E05) and drove the stabbed Ellis Stevens to the clinic (S2E06). His dreams turned darker in S2E07: drawing a bath, he heard the music box and was held underwater by a monstrous woman in a kimono. He recounted his dream to the town — the Boy in White's warning, "Here they come, they come for three, unless you stop the melody" (S2E09) — and Bakta recognized the phrasing from her grandmother's nursery rhyme.
In Season 3 the Kimono Woman's hold tightened. He confided in Julie Matthews and found a polaroid camera (S3E05); the Kimono Woman claimed she could help everyone go home (S3E06). His camera produced a polaroid of the cellar, where he found a hidden door with a corpse behind it (S3E07). Following instructions the polaroids produced, he found the cabin where Boyd had hidden Fatima and secretly trapped her behind the cellar door (S3E08). He fed her his blood, which she hungrily accepted, accelerating the pregnancy (S3E09). Under violent interrogation by Boyd and Sara, he confessed that he had been communicating with the Kimono Woman and believed Fatima's baby would set everyone free — and revealed her location (S3E10).
In Season 4 he tried to atone: he killed the reanimated Roger with a totem, saving Colony House (S4E07). But he found an old photo of Sophia and showed it to her; she ordered Clara to lock the diner's door with them inside (S4E09). In the finale, Sophia told Elgin their cycle was ending and offered him a deal; when he refused, she killed him (S4E10).
Personality & Traits
Gentle, credulous, and guilt-stricken. Elgin genuinely believed he was helping everyone go home; his kindness made him easy prey for the Kimono Woman, and his remorse made him easy prey for Sophia.
