Sara Myers — The Voices' Instrument

Overview

Sara Myers is a young resident who lived in the town with her brother Nathan Myers before the Matthews family arrived. Tormented by voices only she can hear, she becomes the town's most tragic figure: an instrument of its entities who killed her own brother, and later Boyd Stevens's unlikely expedition partner. A main character in S1–S2, she appears as a guest in S3–S4.

Biography

The voices told Sara to kill "the boy," and in S1E02 she killed newcomer Tobey instead, mistaking him for her target. She later lured Ethan Matthews into the woods; when Nathan intervened to stop her, she killed her own brother accidentally (S1E05). Confined by Father Khatri in a cellar — where he theorized the town is a divine test forming a new, 74th book of scripture — Sara proved the voices real by revealing the bag Khatri had buried on his own arrival (S1E06). Khatri nevertheless urged Boyd to take her on his forest expedition (S1E07). In the woods she led Boyd past the talisman cave to the bottle tree (S1E09) and heard a new, female voice warning that there are worse things in the forest than the creatures. At the lighthouse, the Boy in White instructed her to enter a faraway tree, and she pushed Boyd through it — saving him from the creatures and sending him to the mineshaft (S1E10).

She spent early Season 2 hiding in the church, where Kenny Liu found her (S2E03); she confessed that she had opened the clinic door that let the creatures in during the massacre (S2E04). She later told Boyd that his release of the music box entity had been her doing and that he must destroy the box (S2E10). In Season 3 she helped Victor recover childhood memories (S3E04), was wrongly suspected of Tillie's murder (S3E08), and joined Boyd's brutal interrogation of Elgin Williams, forcing him to reveal Fatima's location (S3E10). In Season 4, Sophia befriended her and tested her through the voices — a task Sara eventually obeyed (S4E04).

Theories & Open Questions

  • Whether the voices belong to the Kimono Woman, the Man in Yellow, or something else entirely. (Not confirmed in-show.)
  • Whether Sara's obedience to Sophia's test places her under the entity's control — or whether she is still playing her own game.
