Miranda Kavanaugh — Victor's Mother

Overview

Miranda Kavanaugh was the mother of Victor Kavanaugh and Eloise Kavanaugh, an artist who arrived in the town in the 1970s and painted the visions she saw — the tower, the children, the bottle tree. She was an earlier incarnation of Tabitha Matthews, and she died trying to save the children: Victor reveals in S4E04 that the Man in Yellow devoured her.

Biography

Miranda came to the town with young Victor and his sister Eloise in the 1970s. She was an artist who claimed to see visions, believing she had been chosen to free "the children in the tower." Her paintings of the Township and its mysteries survive her: decades later, Henry Kavanaugh shows them to Tabitha, and the parallels to Tabitha's own visions — the tower, the children, the bottle tree — are unmistakable (S3E02). Henry keeps a replica bottle tree in his backyard because Miranda first began having visions at the site of the original (S3E03).

Miranda's story is bound to Christopher's. Victor witnessed the day Jasper — Christopher's ventriloquist doll — seemed to talk, and realized only later that Christopher was speaking to the Boy in White, who explained the origins of the bottle tree. Victor told his mother what he had seen, and the knowledge inadvertently led to Miranda's death (S3E08). During the massacre of the original residents, Miranda left Victor and Eloise in the cellar and went to "save the children" — the drawing of the tower marks where she went (S2E08 flashback) — and never returned. Victor survived alone, carrying guilt he still feels: he takes Henry to Miranda's grave (S3E10), and Tabitha — her reincarnation — has a vision of Miranda's death (S3E09). In S4E04, Victor tells Henry the truth: the Man in Yellow arrived like everyone else and lived among the residents until, after they died, he began devouring them — including Miranda. The S3E10 revelation that Tabitha once died as Miranda, trying to save the children, completes the cycle.
