Frank Pratt — The Man in the Box

Overview

Frank Pratt was a town resident whose negligence cost his wife and daughter their lives and who became the first person executed in the Box — the town's punishment of locking an offender outside at night for the creatures (S1E03). His death establishes the town's brutal system of justice. He is played by Bob Mann.

Biography

The series opens with Frank's family: at night, a creature posing as an elderly woman knocks on the Pratt home; Frank's young daughter lets her in, and the creature kills both the girl and her mother while Frank is away, spending the evening at Colony House (S1E01). The community holds Frank responsible — the door was opened because his daughter was left unsupervised, and the town's first rule is that no door opens after dark.

In S1E03, as Father Khatri explains the town's rules to Jim Matthews and Tabitha Matthews, he shows them the Box: the town's only punishment, where a condemned resident is locked overnight, exposed to the creatures. Frank is sentenced to the Box for his family's deaths. Boyd Stevens, the sheriff who must carry out the sentence, tries to spare him — but Frank refuses, accepting the punishment. That night he is locked in the Box and killed by the creatures.

Personality & Traits

Broken by guilt. Frank does not argue for his life or his innocence; he accepts the town's judgment because he cannot live with what happened to his family. His willingness to die makes him the town's first martyr and its first object lesson.
