The Man in Yellow Arc

Overview

The Man in Yellow — the entity in the yellow suit — is the most active antagonist of Seasons 3–4. He emerges violently at the end of Season 3, ripping out Jim Matthews's throat at the bottle tree, and spends Season 4 operating inside the town under the disguise of "Sophia," a woman who arrived with the pastor. Per Victor Kavanaugh, the Man in Yellow came to the town long ago like everyone else; after the original residents died, he began devouring them — including Victor's mother, Miranda Kavanaugh. By the end of Season 4 he declares the town's cycle is ending, kills Elgin Williams for refusing his deal, and strips the town of every talisman, throwing them into a farway tree.

Timeline

S3E10 — After the bottle-tree numbers summon the children and trigger past-life visions, the Man in Yellow appears and rips Jim's throat out, killing him.
S4E1 — He warns Julie Matthews that she cannot change the past, then laments that he will never see what awaits the townspeople. As "Sophia," he reveals himself to the unconscious pastor and suffocates him — eliminating the one person who could expose his disguise.
S4E2 — Jim's body is found hanging in the barn with the words "knowledge comes at a cost" written above it.
S4E3 — While traveling with Ethan and Jade, Victor sees the Man in Yellow's clothes in the woods and is terrified.

S4E7 — In his abandoned car, Victor finds a sack of teeth. He fears history is repeating: like Miranda, Tabitha arrived with a son and a daughter, and the Man in Yellow has returned — Ethan may end up alone as Victor once was.
S4E8 — The Man in Yellow lures Tabitha Matthews into the woods and warns her that acting on the children's-bones theory could unleash unimaginable suffering if they are wrong.
S4E9 — Sophia reveals her identity to Clara, reminding her of a deal they made; Clara gives Fatima Hassan the Man in Yellow's blood to drink. Elgin finds an old photo of Sophia and confronts her; she orders Clara to lock the diner doors with them inside.
S4E10 — Sophia tells Elgin that their cycle is ending and offers him a deal; when he refuses, she kills him. The Boy in White tells Sophia she will finally lose — then she and Clara collect every talisman in the town and throw them into a farway tree, leaving the town completely unprotected.
