Randall Kirkland — The Survivor
Overview
Randall Kirkland is an abrasive bus passenger whose conspiracy theories made him the town's loudest troublemaker. Marked by the music box entity and scarred by the creatures, he becomes an unlikely anchor for Julie Matthews' storywalking in Season 4 — the man who pulls her back from the past.
Biography
Randall arrived on the bus in S2E01 and refused to accept the town's rules. He clashed with Donna Raines at Colony House until she put him out into the bus (S2E04), and spent his first night there (S2E05). He flew a drone over Jim Matthews (S2E07), stoked fears that the residents were in on the town's conspiracy (S2E08), tied Donna to a tree in the forest, and held Jim at knifepoint (S2E09). On the night the music box entity came, he rode out in the RV with Boyd, Donna, and Jim — until the melody played, he smashed the window, fled into the forest, and was attacked by cicadas (S2E09). Recovered in a coma by Donna, he was one of the three chained in the dungeon until Boyd destroyed the box (S2E10).
In Season 3 he tried to steal the town's animals during the food shortage (S3E01) before agreeing to help Boyd Stevens capture a creature (S3E04). When the creatures ambushed the group, he was left behind, tortured, and carved up — then left alive outside Colony House (S3E04). He recovered at the clinic and angrily accused Boyd of abandoning him (S3E05); Marielle Sinclair changed his bandages and invited him to live with her and Kristi Miller (S3E06), softening him. He taught Julie to drive (S3E07) and, in Season 4, became her storywalking partner: he pulled her back from the night the cicadas attacked him (S4E02), helped her retrieve Ethan's books from the collapsed house (S4E03), and pulled her back from Victor's childhood when the Man in Yellow nearly killed her (S4E04).
Personality & Traits
Paranoid, hostile, and survivalist on the surface; fiercely loyal underneath. Randall's scars — physical and otherwise — have forced him from conspiracy theorist to reluctant hero.
