Synopsis

Boyd Stevens and Kenny Liu discover Paula, Reggie's wife, dead in her bed — killed in her sleep by the cicadas. Before dying, she spoke the chant that Kenny Liu heard in his dream: "They touch, they break, they steal. No one here is free." The town now understands that the entity kills sleepers, and Boyd organizes the residents to canvass the town, warning everyone to stay awake. A distraught Reggie is taken to Colony House, where he delivers the same warning to the residents gathered there.

The strain of the night watch is already telling. Boyd catches Randall Kirkland holding Jim Matthews at knifepoint — the culmination of Randall's escalating paranoia — and defuses the confrontation. Kenny Liu agrees to keep Sara Myers at the sheriff station, shielding her from the town's scrutiny. Kristi Miller and Marielle Sinclair settle in at Colony House, where Marielle's withdrawal from morphine continues to take its toll.

That night, Boyd, Donna Raines, Jim, and Randall keep watch together in the RV. The creatures emerge from the forest but stop short — the music box melody begins playing over the radio. Randall, overwhelmed, smashes the RV window, flees into the forest, and is attacked by cicadas. Boyd, Jim, and Donna escape in the van, leaving him behind. Marielle, already suffering withdrawal, sees a vision of cicadas and lapses into a coma. Elgin Williams recounts a dream to Boyd and the others in which the Boy in White warned: "Here they come, they come for three, unless you stop the melody." Bakta remembers that her grandmother used to sing a nursery rhyme that combines the two phrases — the chant and the warning — suggesting the rhyme predates the town itself. Julie Matthews also has a vision and lapses into a coma, fulfilling the Boy in White's prophecy of three victims: Julie, Marielle, and Randall.
